The origins of the University of Malaga go back to the decade of the Sixties, with an evident necessity of the society malagueña that, through their citizens, authorities and mass media, demanded the birth of a university.

One of the main voices that were raised protesting the birth of the university malagueña was the Association of Friends of the University of Malaga, created in 1968 and with important personages of the local life concentrated themselves. In this Association one agglutinated the effort and the most important initiative that had taken place throughout the malagueña history, in favor of creating an institution of superior education. The Association of Friends of the University of Malaga arises from the own society, represented this one by a group of malagueños pertaining to different sectors from the province. In its beginnings like organization plaintiff of the University, it takes echo to the power of mass media, towards it to inform to all the malacitana population of the importance of creating the University of Malaga.
The bases for the creation of this superior institution already were put, because Malaga counted by this time with the School of Engineers, the Normal School, the Faculty of Economic -dependant of the University of Granada -, and the Seminary, where philosophical and theological matters were distributed.

The birth of the University was marked by a long process, in which they emphasized the creation of the University School of Malaga, that began to work in course 70/71 (equipped at first with sections of Sciences, Letters, Medicine and Pharmacy), and the decree of creation of the University of Malaga (next to those of Cordoba and Santander), that was signed the 18 of August of 1972 and was published in the Government reporter of the State the 30 of September of that same month, being this the culminating act of the process of creation of the university malagueña.

In these first years the main location, of the university centers, was the campus of the Ejido, although it was continued counting on faculties of the city right in the center or in different quarters, being the Medicine Faculty first in being located in the new campus of Teatinos, future seat of the university city.
The faculties are changing little by little of location. Thus it is the case of the one of Philosophy and Letters, which it was at first in two buildings of downtown, until 1985 when one settles definitively in the campus of Teatinos, the Faculty of Sciences, initially located in the old University School, and later located also in the campus of Teatinos, as well as other centers that are there fixing their seat. However, some buildings still are located in different points from the city, as well as in the campus of the Ejido.

With little more than 25 years of life, the University of Malaga has turned not only into a great cultural revitalizing factor of the city, but also into a considerable support of the technological and investigative future. The University of Malaga constitutes one of the vertexes of the called "productive triangle" of the city, formed in addition by the airport and the Technological Park of Andalusia. The last one is joined already to the university institution across a continuous flow of ideas, professionals of high qualification and advanced technologies.

The policy of infrastructure of the University of Malaga has as final target join in Teatinos's campus all the centers and university services. In the next years the construction of new centers, as well as the unfolding of the buildings that receive to more than one center, they will be forming the future university city, which will occupy as a whole a surface near to two million square meters..

The new Rectorado is located in the old building of Post office located in downtown of Malaga. In this enclosure the services of General Secretariat and Management are included. In addition, the building counts on the attractiveness to show the public like part of same the archaeological rest of the wall of the Port of the capital, discovered in the subsoil. On the other hand, the Technological Park of Andalusia (PTA) also comprises of the future expansion of the University. To thus it demonstrates the next construction it of the building of Promotion of Use and of the Companies, that will lodge the center of creation of companies, the cabinet of initiatives by the use and the university incubadora of companies. Next to this one, already the existing building of University Institutes will conform the presence of the University of Malaga in the PTA.
