Sierra de Andújar, Natural Park

The Natural Park of Sierra de Andújar is located in the northeast of the Jaén province, in the heart of Sierra Morena mountains, it borders on the west with the natural park of Cardeña and Montoro in the province of Córdoba and on the North with Ciudad Real.

Sierra de Andujar, Natural ParkBecause of its location of middle high mountains, it constitutes and example of Mediterranean ecosystem and hoards a rich cultural history with many adventures in the mountain landscapes, the natural shelter of bandits that English travellers told during the XIX century. It was declared Natural Park in 1989. It has over 40.000 inhabitants and covers four municipalities of Jaén. It presents a varied morphology and an altitude of in between 500 metres and the 1.290 of the Burcio del Pino Peak in the Quintana mountain chain. The economic resources of the inhabitants of the park are based on the profit of olive groves, cotton, cereal, wild herd and big game. Most of the reserves are private properties and coexist with two national reserves, that of Selladores-Contadero and that of Lugar Nuevo.

Sierra de Andujar, Natural ParkThe heart of this mountain chain houses the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza (Our Lady of the Head), patron saint of the huntsmen, who assembles thousands of people during the annual pilgrimage in the month of April. it locates in a place called Cerro del Cabezo from where one can admire breathtaking views. The activities available in the park are the observation of birds, botanical excursions, trekking, mountain cycling and speology.
The Jandula and Encinarejo reservoirs lie in the East boundary and attract many tourists for they have a recreation area. The most interesting routes are that of the pilgrim, that of the bull, that from Andujar to Baños de la Encina and that of Fontanejo.

Most common animal species: Imperial eagle, black vulture, tawny vulture; wolf and lynx; deer, roe deer, boar, buck and European mouflon, as well as 14 species of amphibian, 21 kinds of reptiles, 178 birds and 49 mammals.
Most common vegetation: Holm oaks, cork oak, and gall oak, forest of common pine, nut pine, Spanish pine, mastic tree, cherry tree and rosemary.
